The Valley Of Vision – A Minister’s Evils

If you’ve never read the prayers from The Valley Of Vision it’s a collection of Puritan prayers and devotions that’s not just food for the soul, but is also a help for our own personal prayers as a springboard for areas we should be working through.  I’m hoping to put out a prayer each week from The Valley Of Vision that I hope will encourage you in your prayer life.

Blessed Spirit Of God,
Four evils attend my ministry -
The devil treads me down by discouragement and shame ...

Help me in my work to grow more humble ...
... Then, whether I succeed or fail,
nought matters by thee alone.

Tim Keller on "The Gospel & The Poor"

The Gospel and the Poor

Tim Keller

Tim Keller is senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, NY and an adjunct professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

The original question I was asked to address was "How does our commitment to the primacy of the gospel tie into our obligation to do good to all, especially those of the household of faith, to serve as salt and light in the world, to do good to the city?" I will divide this question into two parts: (1) If we are committed to the primacy of the gospel, does the gospel itself serve as the basis and motivation for ministry to the poor? (2) If so, how then does that ministry relate to the proclamation of the gospel? Read the rest of the article here on the Gospel Coalition Themelious publication

A terrific summary on Tim Keller's perspective on the gospel and the poor, and what the church should be doing in terms of mercy ministries

Better the broken Windows than life with the Mac monks

Using Windows is like living in a communist bloc nation circa 1981. And don't change it.

I admit it: I'm a bigot. A hopeless bigot at that: I know my particular prejudice is absurd, but I just can't control it. It's Apple. I don't like Apple products. And the better-designed and more ubiquitous they become, the more I dislike them. I blame the customers. Awful people. Awful. Stop showing me your iPhone. Stop stroking your Macbook. Stop telling me to get one.

Seriously, stop it. I don't care if Mac stuff is better. I don't care if Mac stuff is cool. I don't care if every Mac product comes equipped with a magic button on the side that causes it to piddle gold coins and resurrect the dead and make holographic unicorns dance inside your head. I'm not buying one, so shut up and go home. Go back to your house. I know, you've got an iHouse. The walls are brushed aluminum. There's a glowing Apple logo on the roof. And you love it there. You absolute monster ... read the full story here

Scripture reveals that the great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. In this paradigm-shattering classic, newly revised and expanded, John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn't truly exist: Delight is our duty.

God is glorified not only by His glory's being seen, but by its being rejoiced in. When those that see it delight in it, God is more glorified than if they only see it.... He that testifies his idea of God's glory [does not] glorify God so much as he testifies also his approbation of it and his delight in it.

- Jonathan Edwards
